The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival will not take place for the first time in over half of a century this year due to the coronavirus COVID-19 outbreak. However, NOLA radio station WWOZ will do its best to bring the spirit of the event to those at home via the Jazz Festing In Place on-air festival.
WWOZ will air archival recordings of Jazz Fest sets each day April 23 – 26 and April 30 – May 3 from 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. CT, which are the same hours and days the event would take place at the Fairgrounds. Jazz Fest sets from Dr. John, Fats Domino, The Neville Brothers, Irma Thomas, The Meters, Allen Toussaint, Henry Butler, Marcia Ball, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Trombone Shorty, Kermit Ruffins, John Boutte, The Radiators, Big Freedia, Ernie K-Doe and Ellis Marsalis are among those that will be broadcast. Plus, WWOZ will air features on the food, crafts and heritage of the Crescent City in an aim to recreate the vibe of Jazz Fest.

Those in the New Orleans area can listen by tuning their radios to 90.7 FM. Another option for those in NOLA and the rest of the world is to stream WWOZ via the station’s website. JamBase will keep Jazz Fest in our hearts by sharing images from longtime contributing photographer Adam McCullough on each day the festival was supposed to take place as well as the “days between” on Instagram featuring highlights from his decade-plus tenure covering the event.
