Widespread Panic returned to The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York for a three-night run over the weekend, marking the band’s first shows at the famed venue in six years. On Saturday, WSP welcomed guitarist Warren Haynes for an extended sit-in. Sunday’s show saw the band honoring singer-songwriter Todd Snider, who passed away on November 14.

Guitarist Warren Haynes emerged following “Papa’s Home” during Panic’s second set on Saturday at The Cap. The sit-in began with Sonny Boy Williamson’s 1937 blues classic “Good Morning, School Girl,” which was subsequently covered by many artists including Muddy Waters, The Yardbirds and the Grateful Dead. Warren added slide guitar to the bluesy number and throughout his sit-in.

Haynes stuck around for “Surprise Valley,” a cover of Tom Waits‘ “Goin’ Out West” and the beloved “Porch Song” to seal the set. Warren joined the band once again for the two-song, all-covers encore beginning with a 14-minute rendition of Neil Young‘s “Cortez The Killer,” last time played by WSP in 2019. Tom Petty’s Tom Petty‘s “Runnin’ Down a Dream” sealed the show.

On Sunday, Widespread Panic paid tribute to late singer-songwriter Todd Snider, a well-known Panic fan, with a premiere performance of his “Play A Train Song.” WSP bassist Dave Schools and Snider were in the band Hard Working Americans together. Schools shared a tribute to Todd last week.

“Play A Train Song” was one of Snider’s best, as evidenced in covers of the tune from Billy Strings and Greensky Bluegrass following his death. WSP debuted “Play A Train Song” during their second set on Sunday at The Cap after a cover of Talking Heads‘ “Heaven.”
