Widespread Panic Kicks Off What May Be Final Extensive Tour

On Tuesday night Georgia rockers Widespread Panic hit the road for a tour that will span through October 30th with a few weeks off in the middle. After 30 years the band will start to focus on multi-night runs instead of full tours beginning in 2017, so this Fall Tour may be the last for a while. Tuesday saw Panic kick off a two-night stand at the Warner Theatre in Washington, D.C. with a career-spanning show.

The band focused on heavy rotation staples over the course of two sets. John Bell & Co. began the show with the golden oldie “Holden Oversoul” and pulled off an impressive jam to connect to “Blackout Blues.” Last night’s first set also featured “One Arm Steve” off 1999’s ‘Til The Medicine Takes, “You Got Yours” off 1997’s Bombs & Butterflies, “Goodpeople” from 2006’s Earth To America and both “Send Your Mind” and “Walkin’ (For Your Love)” off the band’s self-titled 1991 release, aka Mom’s Kitchen.

Widespread Panic’s second set saw guitarist Jimmy Herring pull off strong performances throughout the closing stanza from the start of “Henry Parson’s Died” to the closing “North.” Within were covers of Funkadelic’s “Red Hot Mama” and Alan Price’s “Sell Sell” as well as a wild “Papa’s Home” sequence including drums. The six-piece said farewell with an “Expiration Day”/”Porch Song” encore. Panic returns to the Warner on Wednesday night.
