Widespread Panic has announced a new installment of their Porch Songs series of live archival releases. Porch Songs: Detroit 1996 features an official recording of the band’s show at the State Theatre in Detroit that took place on June 19, 1996.

The sextet’s visit to Motor City came just one month before they would enter John Keane’s studio to record their fifth studio album. Widespread Panic previewed some of the material featured on 1997’s Bombs & Butterflies as “Gradle,” “You Got Yours,” “Hope In A Hopeless World” and “Greta” each made the setlist. Guitarists John Bell and Michael Houser, bassist Dave Schools, drummer Todd Nance, keyboardist JoJo Hermann and percussionist Domingo “Sunny” Ortiz also fit in plenty of beloved staples including “Walkin’ (For Your Love),” “Diner,” “Ain’t Life Grand” and “Space Wrangler” during their performance in Detroit. Covers played on June 19, 1996 included Tom Waits’ “Goin’ Out West,” Talking Heads’ “Papa Legba” and War’s “Low Rider.”
