Widespread Panic wrapped up a three-night run at ExploreAsheville.com Arena in Asheville, North Carolina on Saturday. Like opening night of the run, Friday and Saturday saw Panic honoring Ozzy Osbourne with Black Sabbath classics, including a debut, and welcoming longtime producer John Keane.
Friday night’s first set saw a number of pairings: opener “Rumble” > “Henry Parsons Died,” “Tall Boy” > “Rock” and “Party At Your Mama’s House” > “Stop Breakin’ Down Blues.” Following the latter, John Keane returned to the stage following sit-ins with the band on Thursday.
The Keane guest spot in the first set on Friday got underway with two songs from late Panic collaborator and singer-songwriter Vic Chesnutt, who also worked with Keane. John added guitar/vocals to “Degenerate” and played guitar on “Sleeping Man,” led by bassist Dave Schools. Keane stuck around for the first set closer, another tune from longtime Panic collaborator Jerry Joseph — “Chainsaw City” — which also saw crew member Steve Lopez on percussion.
Set two got underway with the Black Sabbath classic “Iron Man,” last played during the band’s 2023 Halloween run. Schools handled the song’s iconic intro while guitarist Jimmy Herring channeled Tony Iommi’s heavy guitar sound. Frontman John Bell led the cover off Sabbath’s 1970 album Paranoid. Watch below:
The second set also saw WSP classics such as “Diner,” “Love Tractor” and came to a close with Tom Petty’s “Runnin’ Down a Dream.” The three-song encore began with two covers: Talking Heads’ “City of Dreams” and The Dillards’ “There Is a Time,” both of which saw Keane on pedal steel guitar. Panic sealed the show with the beloved “Porch Song,” John Keane on six-string.
The Asheville finale began with “Goodpeople.” Following classics “Rebirtha” and “Greta,” Panic offered up their cover of the Grateful Dead’s “Cream Puff War.” Keane once again helped the band close the first set, adding pedal steel to “Blight,” a song from Panic/Vic Chesnutt side project brute, “This Part of Town” and “Blue Indian.”
Van Morrison’s “And It Stoned Me” kicked off set two, which also contained favorites like Jerry Joseph’s “Climb to Safety,” “Hatfield,” “Disco” and “Pigeons.” The band also covered Warren Zevon’s poignant “Keep Me In Your Heart” and closed the set with NRBQ’s “Flat Foot Flewzy.”
With Keane back on pedal steel, Vic Chesnutt’s “Expiration Day” began the encore followed by “Ain’t Life Grand.” Panic had one more Sabbath song up their sleeve, this time the WSP premiere of “War Pigs,” which saw JB leading a singalong on the Sabbath classic. Check it out:
