Ween Busts Out Jimi Hendrix Cover For First Time In 20+ Years In Milwaukee
After a night off Ween brought their Fall Tour to Milwaukee for a gig at The Rave on Friday. The quintet dug into their bag of tricks last night loading their setlist with a number of bust outs, which included reviving their long-lost cover of “The Wind Cries Mary” for the first time since last century.
The New Hope, Pennsylvania rockers offered up a 31-song show that got off the ground with setlist staple “Buckingham Green.” From there, Mickey “Dean Ween” Melchiondo, Aaron “Gene Ween” Freeman, bassist Dave Dreiwitz, keyboardist Glenn McClelland and drummer Claude Coleman Jr. would focus their energies on a number of lesser played tunes during the early part of their set all coming from their 1991 release The Pod. “Laura” was played for just the seventh time since 2011, while “Mononucleosis” got its 15th ever rendering. “The Stallion Pt. 2” continues to see action after being revived last year after sitting on the shelf since a one-off in 2003.
Around the midway point of the evening, the five-piece would continue to mine their catalog dusting off even more rarities starting with their take on “Let’s Dance.” The David Bowie cover was last played on July 2, 2017. Two songs later the band would go with back-to-back surprises first delivering “Sketches Of Winkle” for just the second time since 2011. They would then offer up the third “Cover It With Gas And Set It On Fire” since 2008. The biggest treat of the night came when Ween unearthed their take on Jimi Hendrix’s “The Wind Cries Mary.” It was just their second ever take on the rock icon’s 1967 single and their first since January 24, 1998 – a span of 538 shows. The band would finish things off with a number of fan-favorites including “Bananas And Blow,” “Spinal Meningitis (Got Me Down)” and “Pork Roll Egg and Cheese.” Watch video from last night captured by Monica Hampton below:
