Ween Full Live Show At Wetlands In 1991

Recently reunited alternative rock band Ween was among the acts whose sets were canceled along with the entire Levitation festival supposed to take place this weekend in Austin, Texas. In light of the band’s unfortunate inability to play a headlining set tonight, Sunday Cinema this week looks back at the early stages of the band when Aaron “Gene Ween” Freeman and Mickey “Dean Ween” Melchiondo were filling the role of opening act.

On October 12, 1991, Ween served as opening band for the Dead Milkmen for a concert at the now defunct Wetlands Preserve in New York City. Backed by a DAT machine, the duo of Gener and Deaner performed many GodWeenSatan-era originals, opening their set with “Squelch The Weasel” and mixing in such now-favorite selections as “Marble Tulip Juicy Tree,” “Sketches Of Winkle,” “You Fucked Up,” and “Fat Lenny,” along with rarities like “The Wind” and “Cover It With Gas And Set It On Fire.”

Mid-set came the live debut of “Puerto Rican Power” and a few songs later the guys gave up playing “The Goin’ Gets Tough From the Getgo” after a couple of false starts. There’s the typical stage antics and silly banter expected out of this exhibit of early-1990s Ween. Watch audience-shot footage of the set from 1991 here:
