New Hope rockers Ween returned to the iconic Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, Colorado on Tuesday night for their first of two consecutive concerts at the venue. The band made their debut at the venue back in 1995 and last night’s show was their seventh at Red Rocks. Guitarists Mickey “Dean Ween” Melchiondo and Aaron “Gene Ween” Freeman, bassist Dave Dreiwitz, drummer Claude Coleman Jr. and keyboardist Glenn McClelland fit a number of rarities into Tuesday’s show including the first “Mononucleosis” since October 15, 2016 among plenty of staples.
The quintet opened the evening with “Exactly Where I’m At” off White Pepper and “She Wanted To Leave” from The Mollusk. Ween then served up “How High Can You Fly?,” which they debuted in 2016 at the nearby 1st Bank Center in Broomfield at a show that ended a five-year breakup. Last night’s concert continued with “The Grobe” and the first “Transdermal Celebration” in over a year. Towards the middle of the set, Gener strapped on an acoustic for “Chocolate Town.” Deaner forgot his solo at first so the band reprised the Quebec favorite. Melchiondo noted they would “splice in” his solo on the live tapes.
Ween dusted off “Mononucleosis” off The Pod for just the 14th time ever towards the back end of the set. Next came “The Stallion Pt. 1” and “Sweet Texas Fire,” two songs that have been revived in recent years. To end the set, Ween strung together the familiar pairing of GodWeenSatan: The Oneness tracks “Licking The Palm For Guava” and “Mushroom Festival In Hell.” For the encore, the band said farewell with a run of “Stroker Ace,” “Homo Rainbow” and “You Fucked Up.” Photographer Jeremy Williams was on hand at Red Rocks.
