Counter-culture icon Wavy Gravy will be feted in honor of his 80th birthday with not one but two benefit concerts this May. Both multi-band concerts are benefits to raise funds for the SEVA Foundation’s global efforts to prevent blindness and to provide eye care services to impoverished communities around the world.
On May 15, Wavy’s 80th will be celebrated at Sweetwater Music Hall in Mill Valley, California with an intimate evening from ALO, Steve Kimock & Friends, the Doobie Decibel System and “surprise guests.” Then, on May 22, SOMO Village Event Center in Rohnert Park, California will host a daytime festival event featuring Steve Earle, New Riders Of The Purple Sage, John Popper, Achilles Wheel, T Sisters, Dead Winter Carpenters, Grateful Bluegrass Boys, Sambadrop, Clown Conspiracy and more. The headlining artist will be announced later this month. Head here for tickets and more information.
Wavy Gravy, whose birthday comes on May 15, has seen and done nearly all over the course of his 80 years from standing on the stage at the original Woodstock to inspiring a Ben & Jerry’s ice cream flavor to co- directing Camp Winnarainbow to sharing a room with Bob Dylan to his 50+ year friendship with the members of the Grateful Dead to MC’ing Gathering Of The Vibes and on and on. He’s even opened shows for John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk, Peter, Paul & Mary and Ian & Sylvia and received his nickname from none other than blues legend B.B. King.
