Michigan-based funk outfit Vulfpeck gained notoriety in 2014 with the release of their silent album Sleepify, which they earned significant royalties from after encouraging fans to stream the soundless tracks repeatedly while sleeping. Spotify eventually forced Vulfpeck to take down the album but not before earning the band enough in payments to fund a free tour.
On the eve of Spotify’s initial public offering today, CNBC had frontman Jack Stratton on to discuss his views on the global streaming platform. Stratton’s appearance on Squawk Alley touched on Sleepify royalties, the independent band’s music appearing in an Apple Music advertisement and the value of streaming platforms for musicians.
