Umphrey’s McGee Kicks Off ‘Wrapped Around Nashville’ Livestream Concert Series

Umphrey’s McGee gathered at drummer Kris Myers‘ Nashville studio, aka Rocktopus’ Garden, on Thursday for their first of three “Wrapped Around Nashville” livestream concerts. Last night’s show, the sextet’s first of 2021, began with an opening frame containing songs picked via fan voting while Umphrey’s drafted the setlist for the second set themselves. The band stuck to originals throughout and also answered a few questions from viewers.

The members of UM were assembled in a circle within the studio and got the performance underway with opus “Mantis,” the title track from the band’s 2009 studio album. Umphrey’s painted outside the lines during the lengthy “Mantis” opener and also extended the “2×2” that followed. Then, the group presented their first “Muff II: The Revenge” since December 27, 2019 and just seventh overall since 2002.

Another title track followed in “Anchor Drops” before Umphrey’s showed little rust as they dove into the instrumental “Eat.” The evening’s biggest surprise came next in the fan-voted set: Umphrey’s first “The Haunt” since January 19, 2019. “Got Your Milk (Right Here)” closed out the frame.

Last night’s second set was bookended by “Wizard Burial Ground.” Umphrey’s then took jam vehicle “Ocean Billy” deep before a short pause due to technical difficulties. The beloved “Nothing Too Fancy” followed and led into classic “Hajimemashite.” Next up was “In The Black,” one of just two songs played on Thursday debuted within the past decade. “In The Black” bled into the end of “Nothing Too Fancy.” Umphrey’s McGee closed out the night by working “Remind Me” — the other song debuted within the past decade played on Thursday — into the end of “Wizard Burial Ground.”

Umphrey’s McGee continues “Wrapped Around Nashville” tonight and tomorrow. Tickets to view the livestreams are available via Mandolin.
