Chicago six-piece Umphrey’s McGee kicked off their 2017 touring schedule with the first of three shows at the friendly confines of The Tabernacle in Atlanta on Friday. UM first played the venue way back on October 14, 2005 and have noted its one of their favorites as by the end of the weekend they will have played The Tab 18 times. The band treated fans to a setlist filled with rarities to begin the run.

Umphrey’s McGee started Friday’s show with the instrumental intro “Bathing Digits” followed by “Bad Friday,” which happens to be the song they encored with on New Year’s Eve. “Morning Song,” a showcase for guitarist Brendan Bayliss’s vocals, was up next and led into “FF.” Both “Morning Song” and “FF” hadn’t been played since August. Yet that didn’t hold a candle to the return of “Last Man Swerving,” a song on the shelf since February 18, 2015 – a span of 175 shows. Umphrey’s took “Last Man Swerving” deep before beginning a triumphant “2X2.” The “Wizard Burial Ground” > “Sludge & Death” combo that ended the first set showed the band’s propensity for heavy material. “Sludge & Death” has been a rarity since its debut as last night was just the ninth since 2004.

The second set started with an expansive “Der Bluten Kat” > “Sociable Jimmy” > “Der Bluten Kat” sequence. Up next was a cover of Mark Knopfler’s “We’re Going To War,” a song UM generally only plays once or twice a year. An impressive segue connected to “Out Of Order” ahead of the sextet delivering a “40’s Theme” with “I Keep Forgettin'” teases. Umphrey’s brought the second set to a close with a “Miami Virtue” > “Power Of Soul” sequence. The latter is a Jimi Hendrix cover that hadn’t seen action in 41 shows. For the encore, Umphrey’s dusted off the beloved “Divisions” after a 31 show layoff. Tonight, UM returns to The Tab. A live webcast is available via TourGigs.
