Umphrey’s McGee Debuts Wilco Cover In Wilmington

Umphrey’s McGee brought a four-concert run through the Southeast to a close with a sold-out show at Greenfield Lake Amphitheater in Wilmington, North Carolina on Sunday. The band celebrated LD Jefferson Waful’s birthday by treating the capacity crowd to a performance filled with interesting song sandwiches, the debut of a Wilco cover and a bust out.

The sextet used the instrumental intro “Nipple Trix” to lead into the month-appropriate “August.” A slightly extended “No Diablo” gave way to “Attachments,” which went unfinished when UM began their first ever version of Wilco’s “Handshake Drugs.” Last night’s first set concluded with a run of “The Floor,” “You & You Alone” and “Draconian.”

Sunday’s second set began with “Maybe Someday” before UM jammed “Syncopated Strangers” into “Wappy Sprayberry,” which bled into the instrumental “End Of The Road.” Next up was Umphrey’s first cover of “Home” by The New Deal since April 2, 2014 – a span of 513 shows. The end of “Wappy” was followed by the endings of “Handshake Drugs” and “Attachments.” Then, the sextet fit a cover of Pearl Jam’s “Release” within their own “Ocean Bily” ahead of a cover of Bob Seger’s “Hollywood Nights” that ended the frame. Umphrey’s had one more sandwich in store for the encore as they worked “Resolution” into Bruce Springsteen’s “I’m On Fire” and back again to end the song and the show.
