In January, Umphrey’s McGee released a single entitled “Suxity.” The band’s first new music of 2020 now has a visual, as the “Suxity” video combines footage filmed on the road and in the studio.

“Suxity” is defined as, “A location, place or state of being where it’s best to have your wits about you” according to the band. Umphrey’s McGee debuted the song live on New Year’s Eve in Denver just after 2020 began. “Suxity” was performed by the sextet six more times between January and March.

UM guitarists Jake Cinninger and Brendan Bayliss co-wrote “Suxity,” which the band recorded at Nashville’s Blackbird Studio with producers Ryan Hewitt and Greg Magers. Jake Cinninger weighed in on “Suxity” during an interview with American Songwriter:

‘Suxity’ is a lesson in simple syncopated, room-to-breathe, funk-grunge. I was looking for a drastic contrast between the verses and the choruses, like Sly Stone dating Alice In Chains. It was one of the more exciting tracks that we have ever cut live in the studio, just grinding, tight and heavy.
