Billy Strings released pro-shot video featuring his guest spot with Umphrey’s McGee on Jimi Hendrix’s “Voodoo Child.” The collaboration took place at Exploreasheville.com Arena in Asheville, North Carolina on February 15, 2020.

Strings was on hand to open two shows for Umphrey’s. Billy played electric when sitting-in with the sextet on UM originals “Great American” and “Phil’s Farm” on February 14 and did the same for “Voodoo Child” the next night. Umphrey’s hadn’t performed that closes Jimi Hendrix Experience’s 1968 album Electric Ladyland since February 21, 2014 — a span of 574 shows.

“Can you guys make a moderate amount of noise for Billy Strings while he comes out for the next one?,” Umphrey’s guitarist Brendan Bayliss asked the crowd before Strings emerged. Billy and UM then delivered a near 10-minute take on “Voodoo Child” highlighted by a duel between Strings and Jake Cinninger that included teases of the Edgar Winter Group’s “Frankenstein.”
