Umphrey’s McGee continued their Plan Bee spring tour on Friday with the first of two concerts at SeatGeek Stadium in the Chicago suburb of Bridgeview, Illinois. The show saw UM debuting an instrumental cover of Tom Petty’s “Free Fallin.”
Umphrey’s McGee — guitarists Jake Cinninger and Brendan Bayliss, drummer Kris Myers, bassist Ryan Stasik, keyboardist Joel Cummins and percussionist Andy Farag — kicked the show off with “Attachments,” which stretched to over 15 minutes before heading into “Words.” A segment of classics consisting of “In The Kitchen” and “2nd Self” came next. “Intentions Clear” commenced a seamless, set closing section with UM segueing into “In The Black” via a well-built jam punctuated by percussion before Cinninger blasted off and the band dropped into a cool down jam that led into “In The Black” which in turn found its way into “Believe The Lie.” The song’s triumphant ending segment would bring the first frame to a close.

A “Hurt Bird Bath,” “Half Delayed” excursion began the second set ahead of a well-jammed “Resolution” which contained the instrumental “Free Fallin’” about two minutes into “Resolution” with Jake handling the melody especially well on the chorus with some soaring notes. UM would go on to deliver a well jammed “Resolution” before heading into “Glory.” A closing section beginning with “Draconian,” which contained an “In The Kitchen” callback, then ended with “40s Theme.” UM would retake the stage for an encore of the thrashy prog-rock of “Wizard Burial Ground” to put an exclamation point on the evening.
