Ike Willis, Marcus Rezak & More Join Umphrey’s McGee In Seattle

Umphrey’s McGee welcomed several guest collaborators during their concert Saturday night in Seattle. The Hindsight 2020 Tour stop at Showbox SoDo included sit-ins from Ike Willis, Marcus Rezak and members of opening act, .

UM introduced the first set with a “Le Blitz” into “Crucial Taunt” combo before stretching out the instrumental groover “The Triple Wide.” The longtime UM staple “2×2” came next, with the country-tinged instrumental rarity “Mullet (Over)” following. The group then offered the newer tune and tour’s namesake “Hindsight” ahead of back-to-back classics, “Prowler” and “Example 1.”

Willis, who was a member of Frank Zappa’s band for many years, emerged for the set closer, which also featured Rezak on guitar. Willis added vocals to UM’s mashup “Life During Exodus” that blends together “Life During Wartime” by Talking Heads, “Exodus” by Bob Marley, “25 or 6 to 4” by Chicago and Zappa’s “City Of Tiny Lites.” After their drop in at the Showbox, Willis, Rezak and The Brothers Of Invention played an official UM aftershow at a different club in Seattle.

“The Silent Type” began the second set and was trailed by “All In Time,” the latter going unfinished in favor of a transition to “Day Nurse.” The U.N. saxophonist Ernie Chang and percussionist Andee Avila accompanied the band on “Day Nurse.” The guests exited ahead of a performance of “August.” The set-closer was “Utopian Fir,” which typically inserted a cover song, this time coming in the form of Rage Against The Machine’s “Bombtrack” with Frasco crowd-surfing (Frasco and UM bassist Ryan Stasik also competed in a basketball crowd-surfing challenge during the opener’s set).

“The Weight Around” was selected to start the encore and the show ended with a return to conclude the unfinished “All In Time.” Watch audience-shot video clips from the Showbox SoDo below:
