This Friday, February 9 at 10 p.m. ET, SiriusXM’s Howard 101 channel will premiere the Howard Stern Tribute To David Bowie. Peter Frampton, Dawes, Daryl Hall, The Struts and Nikki Lane are among the 25 acts that contributed Bowie covers to the special, which will be hosted by longtime Bowie producer Tony Visconti. Umphrey’s McGee also recorded one of David Bowie’s most-beloved songs, “Let’s Dance” for the Howard Stern Tribute To David Bowie and recruited old friends Huey Lewis and Jeff Coffin to add to their rendition.
“It was my pleasure to make about half of his albums with him and what was even better was that he was my personal friend as well,” Visconti told HowardStern.com of his relationship with Bowie. “And I’m glad we can share these fantastic interpretations of his songs. There is no end to how they can be interpreted.”
“This project is very ambitious because David Bowie songs are not easy to play and sing for technical reasons,” Visconti added. “But everyone who participated in this rose to the occasion.”
Music legend Peter Frampton shared a live rendition of “Rebel Rebel,” songwriting great Michael Penn took on “After All,” up-and-comers Greta Van Fleet tackled “The Jean Genie,” Stern superfan and singer-songwriter Kristeen Young covered “Moonage Daydream,” while Spoon frontman Britt Daniel went with “Never Let Me Down.” One of the newest acts featured on the special is Durand Jones & The Indications, who perform “Young Americans.”
Other covers among the 25 set to premiere are “Fame” by Daryl Hall, “Suffragette City” by The Struts, Lisa Loeb’s “All The Young Dudes,” Biffy Clyro’s “Modern Love” and “Life On Mars?” by Todd Rundgren. “Space Oddity” was interpreted by Billy Corgan, “Starman” was given a go by Garbage, “Heroes” was covered by Shawn Colvin and Gogol Bordello reimagined “Rock & Roll Suicide.”
The special premieres Friday at 10 p.m. ET on Channel 101. Look for replays to run soon thereafter and the special to be available on-demand.
