The first set featured a rare song sandwich within a song sandwich as a “Plunger” > “Hajimemashite” > “Plunger” sequence came within a performance on “In The Kitchen.” Also performed in the opening stanza was the third take on the Brendan Bayliss original “No Diablo” which was debuted at UMBowl IV. UM has covered many Beatles songs over the years including the “Abbey Road Medley,” but they debuted a new one to them towards the end of the first set in the White Album classic “Happiness Is A Warm Gun.” The Beatles cover was an option in fan voting for UMBowl II in 2011, but wasn’t played at the concert.
In the second set, Umphrey’s worked heavy hitter “Utopian Fir” in the middle of another heavy hitter – “All In Time.” UM also toyed with “Crazy Train” as part of the “Wappy Sprayberry” jam. For the encore, the Chicago-based sextet dusted off their “The Way You Rule The World” mashup of Michael Jackson’s “The Way You Make Me Feel” and Tears For Fears’ “Everybody Wants To Rule The World” within “August.”
