Watch Umphrey’s McGee Find Out ‘Wassup?’ From Musical Friends In Budweiser Commercial Parody

Super Bowl Sunday is not only known for the NFL championship but also for the memorable commercials that are rolled out over the course of the broadcast. Umphrey’s McGee got in on the action yesterday before the Kansas City Chiefs beat the San Francisco 49ers in overtime by unveiling a parody of a Budweiser promotion that aired during Super Bowl XXXIV in 2000.

Umphrey’s McGee bassist Ryan Stasik, guitarist Brendan Bayliss and keyboardist Joel Cummins star in the clip depicting the band’s take on the “Wassup?” campaign that became a pop culture sensation at the turn of the century. Stasik and Bayliss imitate the original by calling each other with low energy and exchanging well wishes as they watch “the game” and have a bud. Cummins then emerges and yells “Wassup?” leading to the catch phrase shouted out in various forms by a series of special guests.

The band enlisted several crew members and management to participate in the hilarious sketch. Appearances are also made by Jennifer Hartswick, Al Schnier (moe.), Aron Magner (The Disco Biscuits), Peter Anspach (Goose), Karina Rykman, Jeff Coffin (Dave Matthews Band), Marc Brownstein (The Disco Biscuits), Peter Shapiro (impresario), Andy Frasco, Rick Mitarotonda (Goose), Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater), Kanika Moore (Doom Flamingo), Anders Beck (Greensky Bluegrass), Trevor Weekz, Daniel Donato, Little Stranger and Vinnie Amico (moe.).

The parody ends with Bayliss and Stasik going back to their original phone call. Text displaying “Budweiser” and “Celebrating 25 Years Of Keeping Stasik Hydrated” below the Budweiser logo is displayed at the end of the clip.
