Umphrey’s McGee Busts Out Blue Öyster Cult Cover In Brooklyn: Full Show Audio
By Scott Bernstein Feb 15, 2019 • 7:44 am PST
Umphrey’s McGee made their Brooklyn Steel debut in New York City on Thursday night. The sextet’s first of three shows at the Brooklyn venue featured the return of a long-lost Blue Öyster Cult cover, a dedication to a fan who has passed and plenty of jams.
“Crucial Taunt” served as opener and was followed by an exploratory “Blue Echo.” Umphrey’s then dusted off “Morning Song” for the first time since August. Next up was an uncompleted “Bridgeless” that spanned over 15 minutes and led into “Seasons.” Guitarist Brendan Bayliss then dedicated “Rocker II” to Bart Grawey, an Umphreak who recently passed away. The set came to a close with a cover of Prince’s “I Wanna Be Your Lover,” a fitting song for Valentine’s Day.

Umphrey’s kicked off the second set with a 25-minute pairing of “Ringo” and “Day Nurse.” An adventurous “1348 came next and was followed by a run of “The Linear” into “ETI” into “Sludge & Death” into “Booth Love” into the end of “Bridgeless.” The six-piece last played Blue Öyster Cult’s “ETI” way back on February 4, 2016 – a span of 281 shows. “Sludge & Death” hadn’t been performed since June and was just the 12th in UM history. “Booth Love” came on the ninth anniversary of the night it was debuted.
For the encore, Umphrey’s went with the beloved “Divisions.” The band returns to Brooklyn Steel tonight. A webcast is available via TourGigs.com.
