Chance The Rapper Celebrates ‘Coloring Book’ 10th Anniversary On ‘Fallon’

Chance the Rapper appeared on Monday’s episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon to celebrate the 10th anniversary of his mixtape, Coloring Book. Chance spoke to Fallon about the acclaimed project and performed “Same Drugs” for the late-night television audience.

Chance won the Best Rap Album Grammy Award in 2017 for Coloring Book, considered his third mixtape. Nearly every track on Coloring Book included a featured guest, such as Lil Yachty, Justin Bieber, T-Pain, Jamila Woods, 2 Chainz and others. Chance revealed to Fallon that Atlanta rapper Future delivered his part to “Smoke Break” mere minutes before Coloring Book was released.

“Same Drugs” is one of the tracks that does not have a featured special guest. Chance told Fallon he recorded over 200 versions of “Same Drugs” before landing on what appeared on the mixtape. Here’s how Chance described “Same Drugs” taking shape:

“I wrote it three years before Coloring Book came out. I wrote it right around the time I released [2013 mixtape] Acid Rap, when I was living in Atlanta. And it was just this simple refrain that referenced Peter Pan and talked about the hardships of eventually growing old.

“And then I had another song called ‘How to Fly’ that I wrote with Francis and the Lights. They were kind of two competing pieces for which one was going to make it. In the end, we ended up converging them into one song. And it ended up being one of my favorite, or most proud, works.”

Chance The Rapper’s The Coloring Book 10 Tour kicks off on August 8 near his hometown of Chicago and concludes on October 11 in Pittsburgh.
