Trey Anastasio Plays Unreleased Phish Demo On Cory Wong’s Podcast

Phish’s Trey Anastasio shared unreleased demos during the second half of his two-part appearance on Cory Wong’s Wong Notes podcast. Part one of the gear-centric discussion came out last month.

Anastasio and Wong’s discussion picked up in part two with Trey talking about purchasing a piano for his 60th birthday and how that has influenced his songwriting process and guitar playing. Anastasio pulled out his phone and dialed up a demo he recorded by himself based on the songwriting process.

After hearing the two-minute piece, Wong asked if there was a version of the demo recorded with the other members of Phish and Anastasio obliged by playing their recording, complete with a brief lyric section sung by Trey.

The discussion then shifted to Trey talking about Phish drummer Jon Fishman, which resulted in Trey playing the 1992 demo for “The Wedge.” Anastasio called out Fish’s exact precision in copying drum machine patterns using the previously shared “Limb By Limb” demo as an example.

The interview also touched on several other topics and Trey shared some of the newer bands that he currently enjoys listening to, naming Geese, Mannequin Pussy, MJ Lenderman, Waxahatchee, Adrianne Lenker and his now son-in-law’s band Guerilla Toss. Trey also mentioned liking the band Wednesday, giving them a pass for their song “Phish Pepsi.”

“I love Wednesday, despite the ‘Phish Pepsi’ song,” Trey said. “I was kind of honored. I was running, I was like, ‘man, this record is so good.’ Then it’s like, wait a minute.”
