Trey Anastasio Trio Concludes Run In New Orleans

Trey Anastasio Trio hit the penultimate night of their first tour together since 1999 on Saturday as they wrapped up a three-night stand at The Civic Theatre in New Orleans. Guitarist Trey Anastasio, bassist Tony Markellis and drummer Russ Lawton have covered a lot of ground over the course of the last few weeks digging on a wide array of material new and old from both the TAB and Phish catalog. Last night was no different as the triumvirate continued to deliver more tour debuts this time working in four more.
The night got off to a surprise start as Anastasio delivered a solo acoustic rendition of “Theme From The Bottom” for the sold-out crowd. From there the trio worked their way through “Cayman Review,” “Undermind,” which prior to this tour hadn’t seen action by TAB since a pair of performances in 2006 and “The Way I Feel.” The night’s first debut came next with “Sometime After Sunset” from 2015’s Paper Wheels. “Frost” followed with Phish’s “Stealing Time From The Faulty Plan,” which got its electric TAB debut on this tour, getting the nod afterward. Anastasio & Co. reached for “Spin” next. Their first stab at the tune from 2005’s Shine on this tour was quickly aborted before being eventually restarted and successfully completed. “Steam” and “Bounce” helped close out the first set.
“Set Your Soul Free” was tapped to open up their sixth set of the run. The song, which is one of the newest ones in the TAB songbook having been played for the first time last year, segued straight into one of their oldest with “Sand.” The trio got the audience involved next as they provided backing vocals on “Drifting.” Longtime favorite “Bug” followed with the first rendition of “Plasma” in 2018 sandwiched in the middle of “Mr. Completely.” “The Architect” and “Tuesday” brought the night to end.

The Trey Anastasio Trio said goodbye to The Big Easy with a two-song encore. As he has now done on almost every night of the tour Trey played a song solo acoustic first as he offered up the Phish tune “More.” Big Red then introduced the rest of the band and talked about their history together before the trio brought it all home with their final tour debut of the night “Push On ‘Til The Day.”
The band will close out their first tour together since 1999 tonight at Terminal West in Atlanta, Georgia. Watch pro-shot video of the opener from each set and check out the full setlist below.
