Trey Anastasio & Jeff Tanski Perform ‘Divided Sky’ Duet At Beacon Theatre: Official Video
Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio teamed up with pianist Jeff Tanski for a transcendent version of “Divided Sky” as part of his most recent The Beacon Jams performance at The Beacon Theatre in New York City. Official video of “Divided Sky” from the Friday, October 16 livestream concert has been shared on Anastasio’s YouTube channel.
Trey Anastasio wrote the words and music for “Divided Sky” in the mid-1980s. Phish released a studio version of the song on their debut studio album, Junta. The quartet’s first documented live performance of “Divided Sky” took place at Nectar’s in Burlington on May 11, 1987. “Divided Sky” has been a staple of Phish shows ever since. Anastasio’s father, Ernie Anastasio, noted in the 2019 documentary Between Me And My Mind that he realized his son was a special musician the first time he heard “Divided Sky.”
Anastasio and Tanski’s performance of “Divided Sky” came five songs into Friday’s concert. It marked Trey’s first duet on the song, though he did play the tune with Phish bassist Mike Gordon on November 11, 2005 in Utica, New York featuring a brief appearance from Phish drummer Jon Fishman on cymbal.
Tanski shined on Friday’s rendition of “Divided Sky” as he worked parts normally played by Gordon into his performance. Jeff’s appearance on the song was only guest spot of the evening. The next The Beacon Jams livestream can be viewed on the JamBase Livestreams Calendar via Twitch this Friday, October 23 at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT.
