Trey Anastasio Plays Acoustic Set At GRAMMY Museum In Los Angeles

By Scott Bernstein Sep 26, 2019 12:32 pm PDT

Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio took part in “Reel To Reel: Between Me & My Mind” at The GRAMMY Museum in Los Angeles on Wednesday. Anastasio performed a solo acoustic set and participated in a discussion after a screening of Between Me & My Mind, a documentary about the New Jersey native.

Trey spoke with moderator Scott Goldman at the event. One topic discussed was the meaning behind the lyrics to Billy Breathes track “Free” and the band’s concept for a music video that never actually was made. “‘Free’ is about a husband walking the plank to escape his family,” noted Instagram user @Harpua23 in a recap of the discussion. Trey also dove into the subject matter of “Limb By Limb” and explained he was planning for the band to take “Mercury” deep during the final night of the quartet’s instant classic Alpine Valley finale in July yet instead it was “Ruby Waves” that they took past the 38-minute mark that evening.

Anastasio kicked off his nine-song acoustic performance with “Snowflakes In The Sand” yesterday. Trey then treated attendees to solo renditions of “Brian & Robert,” “Blaze On” and “Strange Design.” Next, the 54-year-old musician played “Brief Time” from his Ghosts Of The Forest project and after “Free” and “Limb By Limb” would debut the acoustic version of Ghosts Of The Forest tune “A Life Beyond The Dream.” Anastasio closed out his set with “More.”
