Trey Anastasio Band performed this weekend at Denver’s Mission Ballroom and rolled out three new Trey Anastasio originals across the two shows. TAB introduced “Real You” and “Mindless Mood” on Friday night and followed with “Simeon” at the start of Saturday’s encore.
The first set of the first show began with Phish‘s “Stash” played by the full Trey Anastasio Band lineup for the first time since December 30, 2006. Anastasio delivered the first “Real You” as the penultimate song of the opening half. Supported by vocals provided by trumpeter Jennifer Hartswick and trombonist Natalie Cressman, Trey made it through the joyful “Real You” lyrics before launching into a bright solo while engaging with keyboardist Ray Paczkowski and the horns, including saxophonist Kenneth Whalum.
The second debut of the weekend came in the middle of the second set as Trey led the premiere of “Mindless Mood.” Drummer Russ Lawton and bassist Dezron Douglas held down a groove similar to Phish’s “Ghost,” while Paczkowski layered in chucky Clavinet runs.
The last of the triptych of new original song debuts was saved for night’s two’s encore. Trey played acoustic guitar to kick off the finale with a first-time take on “Simeon,” a quiet, reflective ballad.
“Thanks again, everybody,” Trey said after “Simeon” ended. “It feels good to be able to play new songs like that and you guys are so cool. And thank you, thank you, thank you.”
The first full TAB (which includes percussionist Cyro Baptista) performance of Phish’s “The Lizards” and a ripping “Carini” brought the two-night Mission Ballroom run to an end.
