Tracy Chapman made a rare public performance at the 2024 Grammy Awards. The acclaimed singer-songwriter teamed with country star Luke Combs for a performance of her 1988 hit song “Fast Car.”

“Fast Car” appears on Chapman’s 1988 self-titled debut album. Combs included a cover of “Fast Car” on his 2023 album, Gettin’ Old. His No. 1 hit version was up for Best Country Solo Performance at the 66th annual Grammy Awards. Chris Stapleton took home the win in the category for his song, “White Horse.”

Chapman’s “Fast Car” garnered the singer-songwriter three Grammy nominations in 1989 including Record of the Year and Song of the Year. “Fast Car” won the Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance at the 31st annual Grammy Awards. Chapman and Combs’ performance of “Fast Car” last night — which featured a band of musicians from the original recording Denny Fongheiser (drums) and Larry Klein (bass) along with longtime band members Larry Campbell (fiddle) and Joe Gore (guitar) — came 35 years to the month that Chapman played the song at the 1989 Grammys.
