Tool Drummer Danny Carey Makes Primus Debut In Chicago

Les Claypool and Primus played their first of three September gigs with Tool drummer Danny Carey behind the kit last night at the Concord Music Hall in Chicago. Carey stepped up to fill Primus drummer Tim “Herb” Alexander’s role as Herb recovers from a heart attack and subsequent open-heart surgery.

While Primus will embark on a Charlie & The Chocolate Factory-themed tour late next month, they focused on classics at the Riot Fest after-show in Chicago. In addition to performances of such beloved songs such as “My Name Is Mud,” “Here Comes The Bastards” and “Jerry Was A Race Car Driver,” the trio did have a treat in store for the capacity crowd. Towards the end of the set, Primus covered a bit of “Ænema” from Tool’s 1996 album Ænima. Claypool, Carey and guitarist Larry LaLonde performed the first verse and chorus of “Ænema” last night.

The trio paid tribute to Alexander by having video of Tim’s face displayed on the huge astronaut statues on both sides of the drummer riser. Primus with Carey on drums play Chicago’s Riot Fest tonight.

Here’s the first two fan-shot videos of “Ænema” to surface thus far and we’ll be the look out for better quality footage:
