The Wood Brothers put a bluesy spin on Yeah Yeah Yeah's 1993 hit “Maps” in the latest installment of A.V. Undercover season 10. The trio — guitarist Oliver Wood, bassist Chris Wood and multi-instrumentalist Jano Rix — performed the cover at Ella’s Lounge above Brooklyn Paramount.

Oliver, Chris and Jano previously contributed a cover of the Michael Jackson classic “P.Y.T.” to A.V. Club’s Undercover 2012 series. Rix played melodica on “Maps” as he did for “P.Y.T.”

Fittingly, “Maps” put Yeah Yeah Yeahs on the proverbial map upon its release in September of 2003. “Maps” charted on both sides of the Atlantic and is considered the trio’s signature song.

Chris Wood is a big fan of “Maps” dating back to his Medeski Martin & Wood days. “I almost learned and imitated that song in the past,” the bassist shared before he thought, “How the hell are the Wood Brothers going to cover this song?” While it wasn’t “obvious” how they’d interpret the song, the band saw it as a “fun challenge.”

Initially, Oliver sang the lyrics while his bandmates laid down a rumba groove. This gave the trio an opening they used to add a blues twist to “Maps.” Oliver Wood thought the way they approached “Maps” was how they treat all covers they play. “That’s already just an iconic song, so best to do it as differently as possible for us, and see what we can do with it,” Oliver Wood proclaimed.
