The Spirit Of The Suwannee Music Park :: Live Oak, FL

Suwannee Hulaween continued on Saturday at The Spirit Of The Suwannee Music Park in Live Oak, Florida. Hosts The String Cheese Incident treated the biggest crowd in the festival’s history to three sets including a “Ghoul Train” performance of ’70s classics hosted by GZA of Wu Tang Clan acting as Don Cornelius. Other highlights included Chance The Rapper’s late night set on the main stage, the Sam Bush Band mixing originals with such covers as “One Love” and “Tennessee Jed,” The New Mastersounds putting their spin on “Ghostbusters” and a 90-minute, career-spanning performance from Slightly Stoopid.

All eyes were on SCI for their highly-anticipated Ghoul Train performance following an afternoon set. The String Cheese Incident focused mostly on soul/dance music from the ’70s joined by the Antibalas Horns, host GZA and vocalists Sheryl Renee and Leonard Julien. The set started with a take on The Commodores’ “Brick House.” Roller skaters paraded on stage during Cheryl Lynn’s “Got To Be Real,” which gave way to covers of Earth, Wind & Fire’s “September,” “Pick Up The Pieces” by Average White Band and “I’m Your Boogie Man” by KC & The Sunshine Band. Go-go Girls and bubbles filled the stage as the Colorado jam act played “Car Wash” by Rose Royce leading up to the band’s debut of “Lady Marmalade” (Labelle). Ghoul Train came to a close with a trip to the late ’60s for “Cold Sweat,” “I Want To Take You Higher” and “Dance To The Music.” The theatrics for the finale featured pyro, confetti cannons and a puppet train.

SCI’s third set included a cover of Bob Marley’s “Exodus” played within “Best Feeling” and a drums segment within “Search.” At the end of the evening’s final set, the Antibalas Horns emerged for the funk workout “Rosie.” There were a few more surprises in store for the encore as the horns and vocalists contributed to “Signed, Sealed, Delivered” and “We Are Family.”

The action continues at Hulaween on Sunday with two sets from SCI and performances from Lettuce, STS9 and many more. A number of sets will be broadcast via SiriusXM’s Jam On.
