The Chicks kicked off a celebration of the 20th anniversary of their landmark album Taking The Long Way with an appearance on the latest installment of Jimmy Kimmel Live. The trio — Natalie Maines, Emily Strayer and Martie Maguire — performed their hit song “Not Ready To Make Nice” on Tuesday’s episode of the ABC late-night talk show.
Taking The Long Way was the then Dixie Chicks’ first album since Maines stirred a firestorm of controversy in 2003 with remarks critical of then U.S. President George W. Bush for his handling of the Iraq War. The album won five Grammy Awards, debuted at the top of the Billboard 200 chart and sold over 2.5 million copies.
The lead single from the LP, “Not Ready To Make Nice,” features lyrics referencing what the trio went through after Maines’ comments. Produced by Rick Rubin, the song became one of the group’s biggest hits and took home 2007 Grammys in the Record Of The Year, Song Of The Year and Best Country Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocals categories.
Maines, Strayer and Maguire took the Kimmel stage dressed in red. The Chicks performed “Not Ready To Make Nice” backed by their band and a full string section.
