On Saturday night the Tower Theatre in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania hosted the second of two shows that kicked off the long awaited first Temple of the Dog tour. The band stuck to a similar script as opening night by performing several songs from their lone studio album as well as a number of Mother Love Bone tracks and choice covers.
Temple Of The Dog was originally formed more than 25 years ago in Seattle following the tragic death of Mother Love Bone front man Andy Wood. Vocalist Chris Cornell of Soundgarden is joined in the band by bassist Jeff Ament and guitarists Stone Gossard and Mike McCready of Pearl Jam as well as drummer Matt Cameron who performs with both Soundgarden and Pearl Jam. A self-titled Temple Of The Dog album was originally released in 1991 and was recently reissued to mark its 25th anniversary. For the second night in a row, the LP’s opening track “Say Hello 2 Heaven” began Saturday night’s show.
Each of the other nine tracks on Temple Of The Dog were performed Saturday night just as they were Friday, including the group’s big hit “Hunger Strike.” Ament and Gossard were members of Mother Love Bone and the band’s repertoire was hit upon during the show five times as “Stardog Champion,” “Stargazer,” “Heartshine” and “Holy Roller” were played in the main set, while “Man Of Golden Worlds” kicked off the first encore.
Temple Of The Dog also tipped their hat towards another Seattle supergroup Mad Season, which featured McCready, by performing “River Of Deceit” towards the end of the main set. Both “River Of Deceit” and the live debut of Cornell’s “Missing” to start the second encore were the only songs played on Saturday that weren’t performed on Friday. For the second night in a row Temple Of The Dog worked plenty of covers into the mix including Harry Nilsson’s “Jump Into The Fire,” Free’s “I’m A Mover,” David Bowie’s “Quicksand,” Led Zeppelin’s “Achilles Last Stand,” Syd Barrett’s “Fascination Street” and “War Pigs” by Black Sabbath. Temple Of The Dog now heads to Madison Square Garden for a Monday night concert.
