Tedeschi Trucks Band Debuts Original & Leonard Cohen Cover For ‘Fireside Sessions’ Part 2
Tedeschi Trucks Band premiered their second of six “Fireside Sessions” livestream specials on Thursday. A six-piece TTB lineup played a set at Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi‘s farm that included debuts of a Leonard Cohen classic and a new original.
Derek and Susan were joined by TTB members Gabe Dixon on keys, Brandon Boone on bass, Tyler “Falcon” Greenwell on drums and Mike Mattison on vocals and guitar for the 11-song set. Yesterday’s installment came after the series debuted with a quartet performance one week prior.
The band kicked off their second “Fireside Sessions” special with “Whiskey Legs” from 2013’s Made Up Mind. “Whiskey Legs” had been shelved since November 17, 2016 as per Setlist.FM. Susan then fronted the TTB on their first ever “Suzanne,” a song originally written and recorded by Leonard Cohen which Nina Simone went on to cover. “That’s an old Leonard Cohen song,” Tedeschi told the virtual audience. “We love the Nina Simone version of that.”
A take on Sleepy John Estes’ “Leavin’ Trunk” came next before new original “Hear My Dear.” The six-piece then paired “High & Mighty” with “Get What You Deserve.” From there, Dixon handled lead vocals on The Allman Brothers Band gem “Don’t Keep Me Wonderin’.” The beloved “Bound For Glory” followed along with a cover of Willie Nelson’s “Somebody Pick Up My Pieces.”
Last night’s special continued with Johnny Moore’s Three Blazers’ “How Blue Can You Get.” The sextet version of the Tedeschi Trucks Band ended the set with the return of “Gonna Move,” a Paul Pena cover both Derek and Susan had played before but not with the TTB.
