Taylor Swift Performs Eras Tour Piano Mashup For Grammy Museum ‘Icon Sessions’

Taylor Swift performed at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles on August 18 as part of “The Icon Sessions with Taylor Swift: A 20-Year Retrospective,” an event presented by the Recording Academy’s Songwriters & Composers Wing. The performance took place at the Clive Davis Theater and was preceded by an interview with Harvey Mason Jr., CEO of the Recording Academy.

Mason Jr. spoke with Swift about writing from a third person perspective, issuing a 10-minute version of “All Too Well” nearly a decade after the release of Red, starting “I Knew You Were Trouble” as a “sad piano ballad,” how she’s progressed as a songwriter, her country roots and many other topics.

Swift performed a mashup of “I Knew It, I Knew You,” “August” and “All Too Well” on the piano she used throughout her Eras Tour. “I Knew It, I Knew You” was recorded by Swift for the Toy Story 5 soundtrack, while “August” was featured on 2020’s folklore. The rendition of “All Too Well” played for “The Icon Sessions” was based on the 2021 extended version Swift discussed with Mason Jr. earlier in the event.

“This is the piano that I brought with me all around the world on the Eras Tour,” Swift told the 200 assembled guests. “And one of my favorite things that I would do on the Eras Tour and something that really became something the fans paid a lot of attention to and would make a lot of guesses about every night was, I had this section called the acoustic section. I would do different songs every night, one on guitar and one on piano, and I started to really have a blast with creating medleys towards the middle/end part of the tour. And I’d really just think about different songs I could mash up with other songs, kind of a surprise and delight moment for fans. And a way that I would pick the songs is, I’d find some sort of through line, whether that was rhythmically or these are all about a similar emotion. And I prepared one for you today that, if I was still on the Eras Tour, I would do this one. And it’s songs that are connected to each other by the common theme of being about memory and reliving certain detailed memories of your life and the significance of those memories.”

The following day (August 19), Swift performed a similar set at Ross House in Los Angeles for an Emmy-related event supporting The Eras Tour: The Final Show concert film. The Grammy Museum performance marked Swift’s first public performance since June 23, when she took the stage for the second consecutive year at Travis Kelce’s annual Tight Ends & Friends concert in Nashville. During that show, Swift joined Lainey Wilson for a surprise duet of “Love Story” to close out the performance at The Pinnacle.

The “Icon Sessions” performance also gave a view of Swift’s new wedding ring. Swift married Kelce on July 3 at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
