Tank & The Bangas And Friends Share ‘What The World Needs Now Is Love’ Cover

Tank and the Bangas recruited a number of their musical friends to record a cover of Hal David & Burt Bacharach’s “What The World Needs Now Is Love” in January. The band released a video documenting the process soundtracked by the resulting cover.

Jackie DeShannon was the first artist to record “What The World Needs Now Is Love” in 1965. Many artists have gone on to cover the song including Dionne Warwick, Cillia Black, Aimee Mann, My Morning Jacket and Cat Power. Tank & The Bangas enlisted David Shaw of The Revivalists, Maggie Koerner, PJ Morton, Sasha Masadowski, Etienne Stoufflet, Harmony Ball and others to contribute to their take on “What The World Needs Now Is Love.”

Frontwoman Tarriona “Tank” Ball wrote the following about the experience:

In January, Yahoo gave us the opportunity to call some of our artist friends in New Orleans to help us record ‘What The World Needs Now’ and it was one of the most powerful moments I’ve ever experienced in a room full of artists. It was so New Orleans. The voice of the children, the poets, the different tones and textures of all the artist was truly transforming. I believe that everyone can testify how high the emotions ran this particular day. It’s my hope that people will become moved, active, and use love in their weaponry in fighting for what they believe in right.
