While the original members of Talking Heads came together publicly in 2023 for the first time in 21 years to promote A24’s re-release of the band’s legendary 1984 concert film Stop Making Sense, there were no actual performances involved in the series of appearances. A new report published by Billboard indicates both Live Nation and Coachella organizers tried unsuccessfully to reunite the classic lineup for shows on its stages.

An offer of a whopping $80 million was submitted by Live Nation to the group and eventually rejected sources close to the band revealed to Billboard. Talking Heads — David Byrne, Tina Weymouth, Jerry Harrison and Chris Frantz — would have needed to headline six to eight festival gigs and headlining slots to gain the tidy sum from the live entertainment company.

The Live Nation deal came after Goldenvoice president Paul Tollett attempted to bring Talking Heads to Coachella. Tollett spoke with Billboard and confirmed he made the trip to Toronto last September to attend the world premiere of the the 4K IMAX restoration of Stop Making Sense. The Toronto Film Festival presented the premiere and a post-screening Q&A with Talking Heads hosted by Spike Lee. The discussion marked the first time Byrne, Weymouth, Harrison and Frantz appeared together publicly since 2002.

Paul Tollett aimed to talk to members of the bands and their management about a Coachella appearance. However, after gauging the situation he “sensed there were no shows happening, so [he] didn’t make an offer.” Tollett declined to reveal how much he would’ve paid for a Talking Heads performance at the desert festival that has hosted several notable reunions in the past. Coachella's 2024 lineup includes No Doubt and Sublime reunions as well as Blur‘s first U.S. set since 2015.

Talking Heads followed the Toronto Film Festival discussion with more joint appearances celebrating the 40th anniversary of Stop Making Sense including spots on CBS Sunday Morning and The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. Today, A24 Music announced the upcoming new album Everyone’s Involved: A Tribute To Talking Heads’ Stop Making Sense featuring covers of songs from the film’s soundtrack recorded by the likes of Paramore, The National, Miley Cyrus, Lorde and others.
