An impressive roster of contemporary artists reimagined songs from Talking Heads‘ iconic 1984 concert film Stop Making Sense for a forthcoming album honoring the movie. A24 Music revealed the musicians who contributed to Everyone’s Involved: A Tribute To Talking Heads’ Stop Making Sense, which arrives later this year.
BADBADNOTGOOD, Blondshell, The Cavemen., Chicano Batman Feat. Money Mark, DJ Tunez, El Mató a un Policía Motorizado, girl in red, Jean Dawson, Kevin Abstract, The Linda Lindas, Lorde, Miley Cyrus, Paramore, The National, Teezo Touchdown and Toro y Moi each took on one of the 16 Talking Heads classics featured on the soundtrack album that accompanied the flick. A24 acquired the worldwide rights to Stop Making Sense and presented screenings last fall of a restored 4K print of the film at theaters across the globe. The re-release celebrating the 40th anniversary of the December 1983 shows at Los Angeles’ Pantages Theatre documented in the film took a matter of weeks to top the gross from Stop Making Sense’s original 10-month U.S. theatrical run. Furthermore, the movie broke the IMAX record for highest-grossing live event.
The original members of Talking Heads — David Byrne, Tina Weymouth, Chris Frantz and Jerry Harrison — appeared together for the first time since 2002 at a series of events surrounding the re-release of Stop Making Sense. Such buzz was in the air Live Nation offered the quartet $80 million to headline six to eight festival gigs and headlining slots sources told Billboard. The offer was rejected while an effort from Goldenvoice president Paul Tollett to bring Talking Heads to Coachella never got off the ground according to the Billboard report.
Songs featured on the Stop Making Sense soundtrack include “Psycho Killer,” “Life During Wartime,” “Girlfriend Is Better,” “This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody)” and other beloved Talking Heads favorites. The artists attached to each tune besides Paramore for Everyone’s Involved: A Tribute To Talking Heads’ Stop Making Sense have yet to be revealed.
Stop Making Sense is back for a new theatrical residency that started last Saturday, January 27. Screenings will be held monthly in such cities as New York City, San Francisco, Chicago, London and Los Angeles culminating with the 40th anniversary of the film’s premiere this summer.
