The Kitchen in New York City will host a premiere screening of recently discovered and digitally restored 1975 live performances by Talking Heads at CBGB in 1975. The free event will take place tonight, Tuesday, October 3.
The archival footage was filmed by Metropolis Video and captures Talking Heads performing in the summer and fall of 1975 at the legendary Bowery rock club. Here’s background on Metropolis video:
Started in 1975, Metropolis Video was formed by a group of young filmmakers working in and around Manhattan Cable TV’s Public Access Department. From August to December 1975 they spent their weekends at CBGB documenting many of the emerging bands, later dubbed punk and New Wave, that had made the Bowery club their home. Working with one of the earliest live-switched multi-camera systems and small sound mixers, the group adopted a verité shooting style that mirrored the intensity and exuberance of the musicians, and together they captured breakout early performances by Talking Heads, Heartbreakers (with Richard Hell and Johnny Thunders), Tuff Darts (with Robert Gordon), Orchestra Luna, and Blondie. Highlights of these videos were shown in two sold-out screenings at The Kitchen in October 1977.
Following the live performance screening, Will Hermes will moderate a discussion with members of Metropolis Video. Head here for more information.
