Susanna Hoffs tapped a pair of special guests to duet on two classic covers recorded for the feature film, The Roses. Singer-songwriter Rufus Wainwright joined The Bangles co-founder on “Happy Together,” and Fruit Bats’/Bonny Light Horseman’s Eric D. Johnson accompanied her on “Love Hurts.”
An updated remake of the 1989 movie The War Of The Roses directed by Hoffs’ husband Jay Roach, The Roses lands in theaters on August 29. The soundtrack to the film starring Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch comes out on Friday, August 22, through Hollywood Records.
“After I saw an early version of The Roses, I knew ‘Love Hurts’ would be conceptually perfect for the film,” Hoffs stated. “I always loved the Emmylou Harris and Gram Parsons version. When I recorded with Eric in my home, we faced each other. Singing live together, close to one another, is always so special.”
“Love Hurts” was originally recorded by The Everly Brothers in 1960 and popularized in the 1970s by Nazareth. The newly shared cover features Hoffs and Johnson’s intertwined vocals, backed by drummer James McAlister, bassist Spencer Zahn, guitarist Will Graefe and pedal steel guitarist Greg Leisz.
Hoffs’ previously collaborated with Wainwright, contributing to a track on his guest-filled 2023 album, Folkocracy. Their version of The Turtles’ 1967 hit “Happy Together” was recorded with the vocalists supported by McAlister and Zahn, as well as guitarist Ryan Lerman, keyboardist Benny Bock and horn player CJ Camerieri.
“Rufus is so emotional in his singing, and I’ve always loved that,” adds Hoffs. “I was over the moon to sing on his Folkocracy record. The tone and beauty of his voice always dazzles me.”
