Susan Tedeschi & Derek Trucks Guest With Eric Clapton In Connecticut
On Saturday the town of Greenwich, Connecticut held its annual Greenwich Town Party at Roger Sherman Park. The private all-day event for the residents of the town once again sported an impressive music lineup spread across two stages that featured a mix of national touring acts and local bands. This year’s installment was headlined by Eric Clapton, who was playing his only North American date outside a pair of shows at Madison Square Garden this fall. Joining the legendary musician on the main stage bill was Tedeschi Trucks Band, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Trout Steak Revival and Charlie Scopoletti & The Truth.
Clapton delivered a career-spanning show that found him working through some of his most well-known material. The night got underway with a cover of “Somebody’s Knocking.” The unreleased J.J. Cale tune was recorded by Clapton for his 2016 release I Still Do. The 14-song main set found the 73-year-old guitarist delivering material from his days in Cream with “White Room” while the Derek & The Dominos era was represented with “Layla” and “Got To Get Better In A Little While” along with covers of “Nobody Knows You When You’re Down And Out” and “Key To The Highway.” His solo period also received plenty of love with “Wonderful Tonight,” “Tears In Heaven,” Bob Marley’s “I Shot The Sheriff” and J.J. Cale’s “Cocaine” making their way into the setlist.
When Clapton returned for his encore he had some friends in tow as Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks emerged from the wings with the rest of his backing band. The duo, who have a history of performing with Clapton, lent a hand on an evening-ending version of Robert Johnson’s “Crossroads.” Last night’s take on the blues classic found Clapton handling the first verse with Tedeschi taking the second and featured some impressive soloing from all three guitarists.
