The String Cheese Incident posted pro-shot video of vocalist and special guest Kanika Moore leading the band through their debut cover of The Allman Brothers Band classic “Whipping Post.” The footage was filmed at The Mission Ballroom in Denver on December 29, 2022.
Cheese ended 2022 and started 2023 with a three-night New Year’s Run at Mission Ballroom. The Colorado-based sextet was inducted into the Colorado Music Hall Of Fame at the beginning of the concert on December 29 that opened the run. Both Doom Flamingo vocalist Kanika Moore and Vulfpeck vocalist Antwaun Stanley made guest appearances with SCI as part of the show on the 29th.
Moore emerged with The String Cheese Incident at the start of their second set on December 29 to sing “Whipping Post.” Gregg Allman wrote the song for inclusion on The Allman Brothers Band’s eponymous 1969 debut album and “Whipping Post” was a live staple for the band. While SCI teamed with members of The Allman Brothers Band and extended family at the 2016 Peach Music Festival for a The Allman Brothers Family Incident set, “Whipping Post” was not among the songs they played that night.
Kanika Moore did a fantastic job belting out “Whipping Post,” which featured solos by Bill Nershi on electric guitar and Michael Kang on mandolin. View the rendition below:
