Many wonderfully talented musicians made it to the stages of the the annual Newport Folk Festival at Fort Adams State Park in Newport, Rhode Island this past weekend. Among the performances that included Roger Waters, The Decemberists, My Morning Jacket, Sufjan Stevens, Sturgill Simpson and many others were Courtney Barnett and Jason Isbell each of whose sets have been made available to stream.
During both of their sets, the guitar slinging singer-songwriters relied heavily on material from their albums released this year -Barnett showcasing the gritty rock on songs from Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit and Isbell taking his reflective but inspiring new tracks from Something More Than Free out alongside cuts from throughout his career. Also at Newport, Jason Isbell became the first artist to use Bob Dylan’s electric guitar he shocked the world with at the Newport Folk Festival 50 years prior.
