Just as Wilco was surprising the world with the release of their previously unannounced album Star Wars on July 16, frontman Jeff Tweedy was sitting down to chat with Pitchfork Editor-in-Chief Mark Richardson at the Museum of Contemporary Art in the band’s hometown of Chicago. Tweedy and the rest of Wilco went on to debut the entire album at their headlining set at the Pitchfork Music Festival the next day.

The 45-minute discussion that began with the Star Wars revelation was part of the museum’s In Sight Out series. During the interview which included fielding questions from the audience, Tweedy discussed the new album, the growth of the band and their catalog of songs, his development and creative process as an artist over the length of his career, the early 1990s music scene in Chicago and much more.

An audience member also asked about Tweedy’s apparent dislike of the Grateful Dead, in which Tweedy revealed he befriended Grateful Dead guitarist Bob Weir (whom he still texts with and calls “Bobby”) during the AmericanaramA tour, affirming that he does not, in fact, “hate” the guitarist’s band.
