Steve Kimock & Friends Perform In NYC & Philly: Audio & Video
By Andy Kahn Sep 29, 2019 • 10:02 am PDT

Guitarist Steve Kimock held Steve Kimock & Friends shows in New York City on Friday and outside Philadelphia on Saturday. Friday’s concert featured a special tribute to Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter, who died last week at the age of 78. Following Saturday’s live stream, pro-shot video of the entire concert is currently available.
Supporting Kimock was his son, drummer , along with keyboardist Jeff Chimenti and bassist Reed Mathis. Pianist/vocalist Leslie Mendelson sat-in with the ensemble during Friday’s performance at (Le) Poisson Rouge. Mendelson joined at the end of the first set for a cover of Daniel Lanois’ “The Maker.” She came back in the second set for “Satellite City” and remained on stage while Steve Kimock paid tribute to Hunter. The musicians then wove together “Crazy Fingers” and “Dark Star.” The night ended with “Happy Birthday” sung in honor of Mathis.
Saturday’s concert at Ardmore Music Hall in Ardmore, Pennsylvania started with an elongated “Ice Cream.” Next came the Grateful Dead’s “Bird Song” with Steve Kimock employing a steel guitar on the mellow cover. The funky “Butter” followed with “Mississippi Moon” closing out the four-song set. Set two on Saturday also featured four songs, “You’re The One,” “Hymn To Freedom,” the Dead’s “Help On The The Way” and the set closer “One For Brother Mike.” Kimock and his companions encored with his gorgeous steel guitar arrangement of the Grateful Dead’s “Stella Blue.”
