On Saturday and Sunday nights The Chapel in San Francisco hosted a two-night celebration of Spiral Stairs’ 50th birthday. As reported the Pavement guitarist born into this world as Scott Kannberg reunited with old Pavement mate Stephen Malkmus and his band The Jicks on Saturday night and they reprised the mini-reunion on Sunday night.

Stephen Malkmus And The Jicks headlined the action on Sunday night and presented a set mixed with originals and covers. Malkmus and his band contributed covers of “China Cat Sunflower” > “I Know You Rider” to the Day Of The Dead Grateful Dead compilation released earlier this year. The group worked “China” > “Rider” into their set on Sunday night. Towards the end of his main set, Malkmus brought out Spiral Stairs for a series of three Pavement songs, “Stereo,” “Two States” and “Lions (Linden).” The latter also featured Pavement’s first drummer, Gary Young. Gary is known for his on-stage antics and didn’t disappoint as he performed a handstand for the crowd.

For the encore Stephen Malkmus And The Jicks were again joined by Spiral Stairs. Malkmus introduced “Box Elder” as the first Pavement song. The evening ended with a performance of “Date With Ikea,” a track from 1997’s Brighten The Corners which was the only repeat of Kannberg’s time on stage with Malkmus. Spiral Stairs and Stephen Malkmus are both founding members of Pavement and participated in a 2010 reunion.
