Last night’s episode of The Late Show With Stephen Colbert featured a segment that followed host Stephen Colbert to the United States Thule Air Base in Greenland to meet with members of the military’s Space Force. Singer-songwriter and Navy veteran Sturgill Simpson accompanied Colbert on the USO-assisted trip.

Colbert hosted the military members at the Top Of The World Club, buying a round of drinks and taking shots with Simpson. Colbert performed a standup comedy routine for the assembled service members, regularly making jokes about the 24 hours of sunlight the region was experiencing.

During Colbert’s set, he mentioned the other branches of the U.S. military have official anthems but the Space Force’s “Invisible Eagle,” a march written by John Philip Sousa, lacked lyrics. Seeking to change that, Colbert brought out Simpson to help sing a proposed set of lyrics for the 120-year-old song. Colbert and Simpson also participated in karaoke with the military members, including backing Chief Master Sergeant of the Space Force Roger Towberman on “Radar Love.”

In 2016, Colbert and Simpson visited a Waffle House together. The joint trip followed the debut of their collaborative song about the famed breakfast chain “No Shirt, No Shoes, No Knuckleheads.”

Simpson was sidelined from performing after revealing he suffered a severe vocal chord injury in September 2021. The Grammy-winning musician has not appeared in concert since then and currently has no live shows scheduled.
