Stanton Moore Joins Gov’t Mule For Grateful Dead & The Beatles Covers In Georgia
By Andy Kahn Aug 2, 2017 • 7:25 am PDT
Last night Gov’t Mule held a concert at Jessye Norman Amphitheater in Augusta, Georgia. The performance featured members of opening act Galactic sitting-in with Mule on covers by the Grateful Dead, The Beatles and more.
On what would have been Grateful Dead guitarist Jerry Garcia’s 75th birthday, Mule frontman Warren Haynes led the group through a show-opening take on “Patchwork Quilt,” a song he wrote after learning of Garcia’s tragic death. Galactic drummer Stanton Moore had a second kit set up on stage and joined Haynes, fellow drummer Matt Abts, bassist Jorgen Carlsson and multi-instrumentalist Danny Louis on the Dead’s “Dark Star.” Moore stayed around for a segue into the Bonnie Dobson staple of the Dead’s live repertoire “Morning Dew.”
Gov’t Mule’s set progressed with favorites such as “Larger Than Life” and “Sco-Mule” as well as “Traveling Tune” and “Sarah, Surrender” off the band’s just-released studio album Revolution Come … Revolution Go. Moore then returned to his kit for the completion of “Dark Star” and a “Drums” jam with Abts. Mule’s set ended with Galactic saxophonist Ben Ellman assisting on “Blind Man In The Dark.” For the encore Haynes welcomed back Moore for a rendition of The Beatles’ “Dear Prudence.”
