Happy St. Patrick’s Day! No matter what your plans are today — dressing green, attending a parade, eating corned beef, drinking green beer, etc — you’re in luck because JamBase is here to help soundtrack your March 17th.
This edition of Saturday Stream presents a Spotify Playlist with an Irish accent. Rather than pull together all of the well-known St. Patty’s Day tunes from bagpipe blasting bands, this collection goes a bit outside of the box for a jam scene focused set of shamrock songs.
Jerry Garcia and David Grisman get things going with “Whiskey In The Jar” and “Dreadful Wind And Rain” from their Shady Grove album. Grateful Dead songs are married with traditional Irish tunes via the self-titled Wake The Dead tribute album featuring Bay Area musicians Maureen Brennan, Cindy Browne, Danny Carnahan, Kevin Carr, Sylvia Herold, Paul Kotapish and Brian Rice, as well as Garcia/Grisman collaborator Joe Craven.

Irish vocalist Van Morrison can then be heard on four tracks, backed by The Band at the famed The Last Waltz concert, alongside fellow Irish icons The Chieftains, joined by guitarist extraordinaire Mark Knopfler and solo on his classic ode to the Belfast street “Cypress Avenue.” Elton John follows with his own “Belfast” composition before popular Irish group Thin Lizzy gives their take on “Dublin,” while singer-songwriter Guy Clark laments being stuck with the “Dublin Blues.”
The Beatles legend John Lennon’s solo track “The Luck Of The Irish” comes ahead of Irish rockers U2’s Northern Ireland inspired “Sunday Bloody Sunday.” Guitarist John Mayer closes things out with the tender “St. Patrick’s Day.” Stream the playlist below:
