Colorado’s Squeaky Feet captured the intense energy of their dynamic live shows and impressive ability to craft prog-laced anthems on their new single, “Brainrot.” The searing track is the second sample of Overview Effect, the quintet’s forthcoming sophomore studio album, which arrives on October 10.

Founded in 2019, Squeaky Feet — guitarists Colin Shore and Greg King, bassist Jimmy Finnegan, keyboardist Brian Keller and drummer Kevin D’Angelo — have steadily built a fervent fanbase thanks to their genre-defying ways and adventurous improvisational tendencies. The band leans into their progressive and psych-rock influences on Overview Effect, the follow-up to 2023’s Cause For Alarm.

“This album is about facing and overcoming adversity, and pushing through problems,” guitarist and vocalist Colin Shore said of Overview Effect. “We wanted it to hit hard – emotionally and musically.” The LP’s previously shared lead single, “Irish Goodbye,” is described by Shore as “a musical gut punch” which “encapsulates that vision.”

Out today is “Brainrot,” a different kind of musical gut punch. The lyrics of Squeaky Feet’s new track address the information overload that comes with ever-advancing digital technology and the increasing decline of human attention spans. Musically, the song contains exciting transitions, fiery guitar licks and a blistering saxophone duet.

“‘Brainrot’ is a high-energy, quirky anthem about how our phones and bite-sized content are chipping away at our brains and focus,” explained Shore. “The fast-paced tempo and dynamic shifts in the music reflect this theme, while the lyrics cut straight to the point. The sax duet and guitar solo are designed to hit you hard, just like social media bombards you with content.”

Brian Keller, who plays sax in addition to keys, weighed in on the experience recording the song in the studio. “This track was a blast to record because the sax had to take on an almost combative role. The duet is intentionally overwhelming at times – we aimed to create a musical representation of information overload,” Keller noted.
